What is EEOICPA — and why it matters for Nevada's DOE workers

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) is a federal program run by the U.S. Department of Labor's Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC). It provides lifetime medical benefits and compensation to Department of Energy nuclear-weapons workers — and their survivors — who developed illnesses from on-the-job exposure to radiation, beryllium, silica, and other toxic substances. Thousands of Southern Nevadans worked at the Nevada Test Site, yet many never realize they may be eligible.

Right here in Nevada

The Nevada Test Site is a covered DOE facility

The Nevada Test Site / Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in Mercury — about 65 miles northwest of our Las Vegas office — has been a covered Department of Energy facility since 1951. If you worked there as a DOE employee, contractor, or subcontractor, you may be eligible for EEOICPA benefits, including through a Special Exposure Cohort (SEC) that makes qualifying easier for certain cancers.

Answers for DOE energy workers

EEOICPA FAQ

What is EEOICPA?
The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) is a federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor's Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC). It provides medical benefits and compensation to Department of Energy nuclear-weapons workers — and their survivors — who developed illnesses from workplace exposure to radiation, beryllium, silica, and other toxic substances.
Who qualifies as a covered energy worker?
Eligible individuals include employees, contractors, and subcontractors who worked at covered DOE facilities such as the Nevada Test Site, certain atomic weapons and beryllium vendor employees, and certain survivors of these workers. Some claimants also qualify under Section 5 of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).
Is the Nevada Test Site (NNSS) a covered facility?
Yes. The Nevada Test Site / Nevada National Security Site in Mercury, NV has been a covered DOE facility since 1951. It has two Special Exposure Cohort (SEC) classes — roughly 1951–1962 and 1963–1992 — for workers with at least 250 aggregate work days. Over $2 billion in EEOICPA benefits has already been paid to Nevada Test Site workers.
What illnesses are covered?
Part B covers radiation-induced cancers, chronic beryllium disease, beryllium sensitivity, and chronic silicosis. Part E covers illnesses linked to exposure to toxic substances at a DOE facility. Coverage depends on your work history and medical evidence.
What is the Medical Benefits Card (White Card)?
When a claim is accepted, DEEOIC issues a Medical Benefits Card — often called the "White Card" — that pays for treatment of your accepted conditions at no cost to you. Our clinic can treat your accepted covered conditions and bill DEEOIC directly.
What compensation is available?
Under Part B, eligible workers may receive a lump sum of up to $150,000 plus medical benefits. Under Part E, compensation is based on impairment and wage loss, with survivor benefits available. Medical benefits can include office visits, prescriptions, medical travel, durable medical equipment, and home health care.
How do I file a claim, and how does your clinic help?
Claims are filed with DEEOIC, and the U.S. Department of Labor's Las Vegas Resource Center offers free help at (866) 697-0841. Our clinic helps you understand your eligibility, treats your accepted covered conditions with your Medical Benefits Card, and provides Part E impairment evaluations and documentation to support your claim.
